Research

With Daved Fremont and Michael Diamond, I use structural and biophysical techniques to study host-virus interactions, including immune surveillance and evasion. My current focus is SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent of the COVID-19 pandemic. Current clinical interventions for COVID-19 include vaccines and monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) designed to combat ancestral strains of the virus, but emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants have developed resistance. I study how the immune system recognizes and combats these variants of concern/interest (VOC/VOI), including detailed structural studies of antibodies. Our work may lead to the development of new interventions (e.g. broadly protective mAbs) or guide the improvement of existing tools.
